About this event

Liljestrand Foundation is excited to announce its inaugural Design Conversation Series. Conceived and organized in accordance with the mission and vision of the Foundation and curated by Liljestrand Foundation Board Member, Dean Sakamoto, FAIA, the series will bring world-class designers and design thinkers to share their expertise in an informal and intimate setting.

The Design Conversation Series features designers and critics from the fields of urbanism, architecture, landscape architecture, industrial, graphic and exhibition design who have made a global impact through their work.

We invite you to join us for the first lecture in the series - an evening of conversation with renowned Toronto based architects, Brigitte Shim, Hon. FAIA, and Howard Sutcliffe, Hon. FAIA, of Shim-Sutcliffe Architects. The event will take place on Thursday, July 12th, at 5:30pm.

Ms. Shim and Mr. Sutcliffe will lead a conversation about their design philosophy and share examples of their work. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage with them throughout this informal discussion and cocktail event at the inspired setting of the Liljestrand House.

Ms. Shim and Mr. Sutcliffe are principals of Shim-Sutcliffe Architects based in Toronto, Canada. Ms. Shim is a Professor at the John H. Daniels Faculty of Architecture, Landscape, and Design at the University of Toronto, and has held numerous visiting professorships at institutions such as Yale University and Harvard University.

Shim-Sutcliffe’s projects have won local, national and international recognition and awards. Their built work has been exhibited internationally and has been published globally. They have been honored with fourteen Governor General’s Medals and Awards for Architecture from the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada along with an American Institute of Architects National Honor Award.

Completed work includes The Integral House, Corkin Gallery, Weathering Steel House, Muskoka Boathouse, Craven Road House and Studio, Ravine Guest House, Laneway House, House on Hurricane Lake, and Garden Pavilion and Reflecting Pool. Each project responds to its specific site conditions, and seeks to investigate new relationships between exterior and interior. Shim-Sutcliffe are currently working on two innovative projects on the island Oahu in the early stages of construction.
