Prologue Event

On October 18th we will be holding our prologue event at the Louise Lowry Davis Center. At this time we will assign the teams and quadrants of lower state street and have a short presentation on the struggles facing state street right now. We encourage everyone on a design team to attend as this information will be important to your design on Saturday. You will also be able to get familiar with the space and discuss a game-plan with your team. The event is mandatory. Wine, cheese and crackers will be provided. We hope to see you there!

Speakers

Dave Davis: Introduction

Dave will be speaking to the history of State Street and will define the problem facing Lower State Street today. Asking how we address the changing nature of state street and what is its future of state, Dave will discuss the options, from emhasizing smaller spaces, to public use corridors, and residential.

Bio: With a Bachelor and Master of Arts in Economics from University of California, Santa Barbara, Dave served as the City of Santa Barbara’s Community Development Director and City Planner for almost 25 years before retiring from public service. He has also taught planning and environmental studies at University of California, Los Angeles and Moorpark College. He is the recipient of numerous awards, including national recognition for planning innovation from the National League of Cities, social advocacy from the American Planning Association, and lifetime achievement from the American Institute of Architects. He has been named “Planner of the Year” by the Santa Barbara Citizen’s Planning Association, “Citizen of the Year” by the Santa Barbara Downtown Organization, and has been recognized for distinction by the Pacific Coast Business Times in “Who’s Who in Clean Tech and Sustainability."

Chuck Flacks: Homelessness

Chuck is the Executive Director of the Central Coast Collaborative on Homelessness (C3H). He will be discussing the nature of homelessness on Lower State Street, it's influences and possible design solutions

Bio: Chuck Flacks, Executive Director of the Central Coast Collaborative on Homelessness (C3H), has a long history of nonprofit work. His 20-year career in San Diego included time at the San Diego Workforce Partnership bringing labor market information and workforce development policy to employers, job seekers, community organizations, career counselors and decision makers.

Maggie Campbell: Downtown Organization

Maggie will give an overview of the Downtown Organization Report, that explored the challenges of retail on Lower State Street, storefront vancancies and the possibility of housing as a solution.

Bio: Maggie is the Executive Director of the Downtown Santa Barbara. Campbell has been dedicated to downtown revitalization and development for more than 25 years, and she has a long history in leadership roles with similar efforts in diverse communities such as St. Louis, Mo.; the renowned Old Pasadena District in Pasadena; Arlington, Texas; and the historic West End District in Dallas, Texas.

Bob Tuller: Real Estate and Development

Bob will be providing the perspective of the property owners on State Street, giving an important look into the struggles of commerical uses.

Bio: For 40 years, Bob Tuler, Co-Founder and Principal of Radius Commercial Real Estate & Investments, has specialized in the leasing and sales of office, industrial, retail and R&D properties, representing the owners, buyers and tenants in many of the largest commercial sales and lease transactions in Santa Barbara, Goleta and Carpinteria. He has leased and sold over 15.3 million sq. ft. of commercial buildings in the Santa Barbara area, totaling nearly $1.7 Billion in volume, and he has completed the most commercial sales and lease transactions of any agent in Santa Barbara County.
