This seminar will cover the design and statistical analysis of case-control studies. Advantages and disadvantages of case-control studies in relation to other study designs will be discussed. Topics covered will include considerations for defining cases and controls, matching protocols and addressing confounding. As part of this seminar, we will discuss commonly used statistical methods for analysis including chi-square test and logistic regression. Further, we illustrate sample size estimation for case-control studies using freely available sample size calculators. Seminar participants will understand what situations are favorable for using a case-control study design and be able to develop an effective case-control study and select and apply appropriate statistical procedures for data analysis.
Understand how to design a case-control study
Be able to analyze data from case-control studies
Be able to determine sample size needed for a prospective case-control study
