Event description
The small town of Moab, Utah, out in the red rock desert and thisclose to the Colorado state line...

About this event

...is, in many ways, the gateway to the Colorado Plateau… Surrounded by two national parks and miles of massive red rock formations, Moab is paradise for hikers, bikers, 4-wheelers, river rafters, and – of course – nature and landscape photographers! These deep canyons, mesas and buttes have been carved by thousands of years of water pouring over them in the form of the Colorado and Green Rivers, which meet not too far south of town. Arches and Canyonlands National Parks seem to get busier every year, but we’ll be staying out of the national parks on this trip, taking the roads less traveled, and looking for equally beautiful images outside of the national parks. This is the perfect time to practice mindful photography in the desert. That is, when the summer crowds have gone home! This is the time I most like to visit Moab and the surrounding area! Occasionally, there’s even snow on the rocks this time of year, which makes for great photo opportunities. But if not, it’s still magnificent! Everywhere we go will be within a fairly short distance of downtown Moab, so we’ll be able to get back into town for meals pretty easily as well. The desert has a real cleansing effect on my psyche, and I think you’ll find it equally so. We’ll be out in the early mornings and at sunset to catch the best light on the rock formations, both Friday and Saturday, and we’ll have a break mid-day Saturday to catch up on our rest, or process photos, or do some shopping downtown, whatever you like on your own. Moab is surrounded by ancient Indian petroglyphs and we’ll spend Sunday morning out hunting for them. If you haven’t seen them before, this is something you don’t want to miss!

Fitness Level: Easy

Most photography will take place within no more than a quarter mile from wherever we stop our cars, and possibly much less. We’ll carpool our way through some fantastic red rock scenery! Most passenger cars can make it even on these dirt roads, but it’s highly suggested to rent a 4WD vehicle if you don’t have one. Terrain is typically level and smooth, but there’s a few bumpy spots and small ruts. There are plenty of photographic opportunities within a short distance from the road. We’ll be passing through some camping areas that have restrooms. Whew!

“Easy” means you are able to:

• Stay out for most of the day, driving, walking, and carrying your gear

• Climb several flights of stairs without difficulty

• Walk on uneven ground without assistance

• Walk on wet, slippery surfaces without assistance

• Climb over obstacles (like a log or small rock on a trail)

Experience Level:

This workshop is appropriate for all levels of photographers, but beginners and intermediates will find this most helpful. If you are a beginner, I can offer assistance in the field with your camera and composition, and if you are a more experienced photographer and would like to be left alone to do your own thing, I can do that too! Part of the joy of a weekend photography workshop is the opportunity to spend time with like-minded people. Somehow, when you’re with a group, it’s just more fun! That said, we will be spending time on photographic composition and creative Lightroom techniques to assist you in taking home some beautiful photographic art. Be sure and bring your laptop loaded with Lightroom. Regardless of whether you are a beginner or an old pro, it always pays to bring your “beginner mind” to the experience.

Expected Weather Conditions

Expect temperatures in Moab this time of year to be in the upper 50’s during the day and dipping down to around freezing overnight. You may need a jacket or heavy sweatshirt during the day and long pants rather than shorts. Dress in layers, bring your jacket, and peel (or add) as necessary.

WHAT’S INCLUDED:

• Water and snacks will be provided while we are in the field, and during classroom instruction. It’s recommended that you bring your own reusable water bottle or thermos so that only one large container will need to be used and we can re-fill all water bottles from that. This is more ecofriendly than providing individual plastic water bottles.

• All permits and fees to enter parks and privately-owned facilities, if any.

• Photographic instruction, classroom and in the field.

• Image reviews, group critiques & post-processing instruction.

• Fun! Inspiration! A great time in Moab!

• The chance to make new friends and influence new people!

WHAT’S NOT INCLUDED:

• Air or ground transportation to and from the workshop.

• Ground Transportation during the workshop – recommend rental of 4WD vehicle – or drive your own - we’ll carpool.

• Lodging – Headquarters for the workshop will be determined ASAP once we know we have enough people signed up to go. We’ll be staying at a hotel in downtown Moab, as yet TBD. Expect rates in the $150 a night range, +/-. Rooms sell out quickly, so – don’t dilly dally! This is beautiful Moab, Utah!

• Meals and restaurant beverages are not included.

• Medical Evacuation & Travel Insurance (optional but recommended – expected cost in the $325 range – available through Allianz, AAA and other companies)

Cost: $500

COVID19 INFORMATION ETC.:

AS OF THIS WRITING (JULY 2021), THINGS ARE OPEN IN MOAB. CURRENTLY, 44% OF UTAH’S POPULATION HAS BEEN VACCINATED AGAINST COVID19. GRAND COUNTY, UTAH IS ORANGE ON THE COVID MAP, AND HAS HAD 2 NEW CASES IN THE LAST WEEK. BECAUSE OF THE RECENT INCREASE IN DELTA VARIANT OF COVID19, THE MASK MANDATE HAS BEEN REINSTATED FOR INDOOR USE IN STATE AND COUNTY OFFICES ONLY. PLEASE BE PREPARED TO SHOW PROOF OF VACCINATION TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS WEEKEND WORKSHOP AND BRING A MASK TO BE WORN WHEN WE ARE IN CLOSE QUARTERS, SUCH AS CARPOOLING OR DURING OUR LIGHTROOM SESSION.

ITINERARY:

Friday, November 12, 2021, 1pm: We’ll begin our workshop in a meeting room or café as yet TBD at about 1pm, (information which will be sent to you after you’ve registered.) Following introductions, we’ll learn about photography basics, composition & mindfulness in the field. Check-in at the hotel is at 3pm, (Depending on hotel) and we’ll plan to head out to make the sunset no later than 3:30pm. Sunset is a little after 5:00pm. We’ll stay until the light is gone (probably around 5:30pm) and then return to Moab for dinner.

Saturday, November 13, 2021: Up and at ‘em early to carpool to our sunrise location. We’ll shoot through the sunrise and early morning hours, and then stop for breakfast. After breakfast, we’ll take a mid-day break and then meet up in the early afternoon for some post processing instruction. Mid-afternoon we’ll head back out to shoot the sunset.

Sunday, November 14, 2021: This morning we’ll spend on the hunt for petroglyphs! This is something I love to do! I think of it as a way to make a connection with the ancient ones. Many people are used to attending church on Sunday mornings, and this is like an open-air church to me. You can certainly bring your dslr, but you can also just use your cell phone for this, which I often do. If you forget everything else, bring along respect and mindfulness. About mid-morning we’ll stop for breakfast, and group photo sharing/critique before checking out at noon. Are you ready? Let us know by going to the Contact page and sending an email letting us know which workshop you’re interested in. We’ll keep you apprised of developments.

WHAT TO BRING:
