Event description
Jane Bunnett is stuck on a desert island! What albums does she want with her?

About this Event

To open our fifth season of Desert Island Disks at the National Jazz Museum in Harlem, soprano saxophonist-flutist-composer Jane Bunnett will present the selections she would want for solace on the proverbial desert island. The multiple Grammy nominee — a Toronto native who recorded several projects with pianist Don Pullen at the cusp of the ’90s — is best known as a bandleader who navigates the crossroads between Cuban music and hardcore jazz, most recently with the all-female Cuban group Maqueque, with whom she earned the 2015 JUNO Award for Jazz Album of the Year. Their new release is On Firm Ground/Tierra Firme (Linus).

ABOUT DESERT ISLAND DISCS:

In the fall of 2015, the National Jazz Museum in Harlem debuted its version of Desert Island Discs. It’s modeled on an iconic BBC radio show, extant since 1942, which invites eminences from various walks of life to choose—and discuss—the eight records they would bring for a stay on the apocryphal desert island. For the Jazz Museum’s expanded version curated and hosted by esteemed journalist Ted Panken, the presenters are jazz musicians, who will present a cohort of music, of any genre, that was essential in the formation and evolution of their musical personality.
