Description

Press Briefing to Illustrate the Dangers Inadequate Public Protections

People who have been harmed by inadequate regulatory protections will share their tragic stories at a press conference at 10 a.m. on Thursday, Aug. 10, at the Economic Policy Institute. They also will call on Congress to reject the Regulatory Accountability Act (S. 951), which would shut down our system of public protections.

From dangerous cars to unsafe food to harmful consumer products, these heartbreaking and emotional stories will illustrate the far-reaching impacts of the corporate-backed deregulatory agenda pushed by Congress and the White House by showing how it affects the lives of workers, consumers and families.

  • Rachel Weintraub, legislative director and general counsel, Consumer Federation of America (moderator)

  • Amber Adamastos (Portland, Ore.), who was denied justice due to forced arbitration

  • Dr. Paul Brooks (Vienna, W.V.), whose community suffers from contaminated drinking water

  • Chrissy Christoferson (Bend, Ore.), whose 10-month-old son was poisoned by salmonella in a toddler snack

  • Penny Dryden (Wilmington, Del.), whose community suffers from widespread industrial and chemical pollution

  • Timothy Frink (Hollywood, Md.), whose 3-year-old granddaughter died because of a window blind cord

  • Miles Harrison (Purcellville, Va.), whose 21-month-old son died in a hot car

(Note: The list of panelists may be updated.)
