Event description

Description

We are excited that The Local Therapy Company will be our guest speakers at our "Eating & Sensory Processing" workshop on 24th September 2019.

Difficulties about eating for children on the Autistic Spectrum are very common. These can range from children who restrict themselves to highly limited diets to those who struggle with coping with being in the dining hall at school and to those who fail to be aware of hunger or thirst and as a result significantly compromise their health and growth.

It is an immensely complex subject with each child ideally needing specific and individual advice. This workshop introduces some basics of what you can do to help your child and uncovers some of the sensory difficulties that surround this issue.

We will cover:

  • Reasons why children want the same foods all the time

  • Why children seek out eating or chewing

  • Why some children only want certain types of foods and textures

  • Why children struggle to sit at the tables and eat with others

  • The neurology of why children don’t notice hunger or thirst

Basic and general advice on:

  • Preparing your child to eat

  • How to reduce the anxiety around mealtimes

  • What is ok to accept in terms of ‘pickiness’

  • When to get medical advice

  • Taking a long term view and how to plan ahead

PLEASE NOTE: It is important that attendees know that not all advice will be appropriate to their situation and that this is generic, not specific advice. Alison will do her best to answer all of your questions, so please do prepare them in advance!

Absolutely! We want to share the right information with everyone who supports children and young people with special educational needs, or additional needs, and we would love for you to attend.

Yes, absolutely! This is for you. You have questions that need answering I'm sure, so let us help.

There is parking available, and there is a ramp should you require wheelchair access. The Derby Conference Centre is located near the train station and on popular bus routes.

The event is not suitable for children, and so we recommend they do not attend.

How can I contact the organizer with any questions?
