The activities will begin Friday afternoon, June 16th at the Weis family farm, in the hills of Grindelwald Valley and will conclude on Sunday afternoon, June 18th.
**Please be advised, this is an extreme experience of Swiss culture- you will be blasted with a raw, authentic and one of a kind, life changing experience of how life is on a working farm...with accommodations I'm sure you have not stayed in before.
** This weekend's accommodations will be in a Schlaf im Stroh which literally translated means " sleeping in the straw**
If you have severe allergies to hay, wildllife or the outdoors- you may want to reconsider reading any further! I'm so sorry!
The Weis family has been in the dairy farm biz in Grindelwald for centuries. Their work is truly an art in and of itself. You will get the chance to experience the families process in making their cheese, and butter which are all made on their farm. Our breakfast in the morning will be the freshest breakfast you've ever had! The grandparents are still out there doing their thing, so it is a true family biz.
More about Schlaf im Stoh:
Shlaf im stroh began in Switzerland as a way for travelers to help see different parts of the country by doing farm work in exchange for a nights stay. Present day, it has become a part of Swiss culture as a way for non- farm life folks to get a taste of the life for a day or so.
Schlaf im Strohs can differ from farm to farm. They are basically a form of modified camping. In some farms, you will literally be sleeping on a hay bed where the animals would normally reside during the on season. In our case of the Weis family farm, they have built a new guest loft just above where the cows live ( so no need for an alarm in the morning!) There are two, very large bunk bays where you will lay down a blanket ( provided) and experience " sleeping in the straw". Since we will arrive when the animals are down in the valley for the season, it is very crutial that you understand you will not be getting the best nights of sleep. The animals are very loud throughout the night, however, ear plugs or head phones playing music will help. The kids for some reason can sleep through all of this.
You might ask " My gosh, why would I want to do that?"
Remember earlier when I said you would get hit with a raw, cultural experience.. well, here you go. Once you experience sleeping in the hay, something changes about you. It's no longer about the place where you lay your head, but the experience itself. It's the pure and simple fact that you are willing to go out of your comfort zone, and expose you and your child to something new.Good for you, this is the first step. And no, there are not any bugs that will crawl on you in the middle of the night. There is a nice indoor restroom and shower attached to the main house. However. there is only 1 shower/ bathroom but oddly enough it works with 22 people.
I'm not going to lie- this is going to be my 5th trip back to the Weis family farm and I can't get enough of it but my gosh does the temp drop at night. Please, Please PLEASE be sure to pack extra layers of clothes and even winter jackets/hats and gloves for the evening. For this trip I will be renting additional space heaters for added comfort.
Alright, well now that all of that is said, how about we talk what awesome things we are going to do!
This trip is recommended for adventurous mama's and their child or children who would like to embark on a magical Swiss weekend of culture, hiking and learning how to be creative together! You will learn how to be creative with your child, experience life on a farm in Switzerland, and lots more!. We will laugh, sing, and form new friendships over some famous "Ash Pizza".
