ITALY, 1990s
An 18-year-old woman was raped by her 45-year-old driving instructor.

After pressing charges, the man was found guilty and sentenced, only to have the Italian Supreme Court overturn the conviction a few years later. Why? “Because the victim wore very, very tight jeans, she had to help him remove them... and by removing the jeans... it was no longer rape but consensual sex.” Enraged by the verdict, the women in the Italian Parliament came to work wearing jeans to show solidarity with the victim. While the Court did eventually scrap this “denim” defense in 2008, women across the country and eventually throughout the United States stood up in protest. Today, many U.S. states recognize Denim Day on the last Wednesday in April, and supporters wear denim as a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault.

Inspired by Denim Day, DENIM AFTER DARK supports this monumental day with a special event in the evening. This event aims to gather and honor young professionals advocating for female empowerment all while raising awareness and support of these issues and UN Women’s programs to end all forms of violence against women and girls and advancing gender equality.

UN Women is the United Nations agency exclusively dedicated to advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women, with programs in over 100 countries. We are the global champion for women and girls.

The U.S. National Committee for UN Women, Metro NY Chapter is an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization with a mission to support UN Women programs that promote the social, political and economic equality of women worldwide through education, advocacy and fundraising activities.

**$35 at the door.
