Event description

Description

This workshop, presented by Katherine Skinner and Sam Meister of the Educopia Institute, will provide an introduction to the concept of "digital preservation" as it relates to the everyday work of every professor, administrator, staff member, and student on campus. In it, you will gain access to practical guidance and available tools that will help you better maintain your own content; you will also gain knowledge about how American University can support its faculty, staff, and students as they produce more digital data, text, video, maps, and other crucial research outputs.

Objectives:
• to understand what digital preservation is and its relevance to your work;
• to understand the stakeholders and roles involved in digital preservation;
• to know about current tools and trends in digital preservation;
• to have new resources to help you with local advocacy, policy, workflows, and tools.

Dr. Katherine Skinner is the Executive Director of the Educopia Institute, a not-for-profit educational organization that builds networks and collaborative communities to help cultural, scientific, and scholarly institutions achieve greater impact. She is the founding program director for the MetaArchive Cooperative, a community-owned and community-governed digital preservation network founded in 2004 that now has more than 50 member institutions in four countries.

Sam Meister is the Preservation Communities Manager, working with the MetaArchive Cooperative and BitCurator Consortium communities. Previously, he worked as Digital Archivist and Assistant Professor at the University of Montana. Sam holds a Master of Library and Information Science degree from San Jose State University and a B.A. in Visual Arts from the University of California San Diego. Sam is also an Instructor in the Library of Congress Digital Preservation Education and Outreach Program.
