Event description

Description

On Saturday, October 21 from 3-5 pm, the Louisiana Trust for Historic Preservation, the Shreveport Downtown Development Authority and the Downtown Shreveport Development Authority are presenting a class on cemetery stone cleaning.

Shreveport has a remarkable number of beautiful and historic cemeteries; Oakland, Greenwood, Star, Forest Park, Hebrew Rest and others, and all need help with monuments and headstones, some close to 130 years old. In this 2-hour outdoor class taught by LTHP, you will learn the do's and don't's of how to clean historic and fragile headstones and grave markers. You will practice on a few stones and also be given a small cleaning kit of your own. Drinks and cookies will be served afterward.

If you are a history buff, a conservationist, or just someone who wishes to preserve some cemetery heritage, this class is for you. The cost is $20 for LTHP members, $25 for non members. LTHP has several scholarships available for this class. If you would like to take the class, but need the fee waived, contact Brian Davis, the executive director of the LTHP at brian.madison.davis@gmail.com

This class is appropriate for 12 years old and up.
