Description

Make Votes Matter and Compass would like to bring together Labour Party members, supporters and others on the broad left across west and south west London to address electoral unfairness, and other issues in the debate around electoral change. Come to our evening event to hear speakers from across the Labour Party and share your views on the way forward.

Speakers include:
Ruth Cadbury - MP for Brentford and Isleworth
Chris Willliamson - MP for Derby North
Frances Foley - Compass
Joe Sousek - Labour Campaign for Electoral Reform
Katherine Dunne - Labour PCC for Twickenham in 2017, Councillor in Hounslow

Why electoral change?
In 14 out of the last 15 General Elections - since 1964 – most people have voted for parties to the left of the Tories but the Conservatives have been in Government for most of this time. Margaret Thatcher’s transformation of the country to neo Liberalism never had the support of the majority of the electorate.

In 2015 the Tories had an overall majority on 37% of the votes polled, and we now have a Tory/DUP majority on 43% of the vote. Under a fair electoral system it is likely that Jeremy Corbyn would now be sitting in Downing Street as Prime Minister.

And yet, even when in Governement, the Labour Party has only made half hearted attempts to bring in a fair electoral system for the national parliament while introducing major constitutional change devolving power away from Westminster to assemblies elected under proportional representation.

Why does Labour tolerate this? The reason, perhaps, is not to be found in arguments based on fairness, or the merits of competing forms of PR, but rather a reluctance to surrender the possibility of electing a Labour Government – albeit on a minority of the vote – possessing unfettered power to introduce fundamental radical change. This begs the question of why such radical change has proved so difficult under past majority Labour Governments and poses a genuine problem for radicals when considering this issue.
