Description

Democracy and Money: An evening to discuss innovative ideas in campaign finance reform

While we are now awash in stories relating to the stability of U.S. democracy—such as attacks on the press, courts, and independent investigations—the issue of money in politics remains as salient as ever. The 2018 election was the most expensive midterm in history, with more than $5 billion spent (a 35% nominal increase over 2014). However, committed individuals and organizations have been working to develop ideas, policies, and legislative bills that propose plans to strengthen democracy by evening the electoral playing field. Please join us for an evening to discuss these ideas. Featured speakers include:

  • Daniel Biss, State Senator and gubernatorial candidate
  • Alisa Kaplan, Policy Director, Reform for Illinois
  • Gina Natale, political fundraising consultant
  • David Bonner, Candidate for Illinois House
  • Paula Worthington, Senior Lecturer, Harris School, University of Chicago

Organized by the Chicago Center on Democracy, Paul Douglas Institute, and Reform for Illinois
