Demo Night is a monthly meetup for people interested in democracy and public engagement to share tools and insights, showcase projects, and to collaborate.
Demo Night takes place every third Thursday of the month from 6pm to 8pm. Each meetup begins with an interactive presentation relevant to current public engagement in the Chicago area. The second part of Demo Night is dedicated to "open-space" breakout groups, which are co-learning and co-working groups created and led by attendees.
This meetup is for anyone who designs, hosts, facilitates, researches, benefits from or is interested in processes intended to engage the public to inform or directly influence the decisions of government and elected officials.

An Alderman’s Perspective on Police-Community Relations and Public Engagement // Alderman James Cappleman
Chicago’s 46th Ward is one of the most diverse wards in the city of Chicago, encompassing portions of the Uptown, Buena Park and Lakeview neighborhoods. The dynamics occurring within its boundaries reflect the benefits, opportunities, and challenges of urban living in the 21st Century.
As in many areas of the city, those who live and work in the 46th Ward are grappling with the best methods for addressing violence and for improving the relationship between the community and police.
Join us on October 20th to hear Alderman James Cappleman of Chicago’s 46th ward talk about the current stakeholders involved in the process of improving police-community relations, and how these stakeholders affect the climate of public engagement.
Alderman Cappleman has received numerous awards for his advocacy for others, including for people experiencing HIV/AIDS, homelessness, and domestic violence. Elected in 2011 as the 46th Ward Alderman, Mr. Cappleman has placed a primary focus on promoting economic development and public safety.
Following Alderman Cappleman’s presentation, participants will be invited to join in “open-space” breakout groups, which are co-learning and co-working groups created and led by attendees.
