Event description

Description

Everyday activities such as walking can have a significant impact on the well being of people with dementia, which is why we have established a series of walks across Kirklees.

Studies on men and women aged 60 to 80 found that taking a short walk three times a week increased the size of brain regions linked to planning and memory over the course of a year. Regular brisk walks can slow down the shrinking of the brain and the faltering mental skills that old age often brings, scientists say. For people experiencing early-stages of dementia, regular walking helps to slow down deterioration. Over the next two years we plan to develop walking activity’s and groups to give people living with dementia, their carers and family the opportunity to explore the outdoors, stay active and socialise in a supportive and structured environment.

Sessions will be developed with those that attend to meet their needs and aspirations and offer a chance to exercise the mind and body on a regular basis alongside new friends. Each week the walks will be designed to include environmental activities such as butterfly counts and tree planting to encourage participants to enjoy the benefits of exercise for their physical and mental health. Please note there is a small charge of £2 per person to attend the sessions, donatable on the day.
