Event Details

With the new look BFI taking shape, Rushes opens the lid on talent development and short film production across Britain. Hosted by DigiCult – the home of Digital Shorts, Incubator and the Story Room in Glasgow – an exciting panel of creative executives and independent film-makers will wrestle with the thorny questions faced by every person aiming to make their mark on UK cinema. How do I get myself noticed? How do I get my hands on some funding? ... But are people asking the right questions? DigiCult’s panel will discuss the qualities which set the successful film-maker apart from the wannabee. And what makes one film great and another forgettable.

We are delighted to be joined for this panel discussion by:

Lizzie Francke (BFI)
Lizzie is a Senior Production and Development Executive at BFI’s Film Fund, having previously worked as Senior Development Executive for UK Film Council. In 1997, Lizzie was appointed Artistic Director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival, re-establishing the festival as a key showcase for British cinema. She then worked as an independent producer and Executive Producer for EM Media where her credits include Control, And When Did You Last See Your Father, Magicians, Donkey Punch, Summer, Mum and Dad, and Better Things.

Marc Boothe (B3 Media)
Marc is a creative producer, with a passion for supporting, developing and producing emerging talent across film, new media and visual arts. He produced the acclaimed feature film Bullet Boy, directed by Saul Dibb, for which he was nominated Best British Producer by the London Film Critics Circle. Marc is Founder and Managing Director of B3 Media; an award winning digital media arts network, based in Brixton, which has been responsible for a number of innovative initiatives ranging from new media, moving image to digital cinema.

Jessica Ashman (Animator, Writer/Director ‘Fixing Luka)
Jessica specialises in stop-motion, 2-D animation and digital illustration. Since graduating from the University of Lincoln (2007), Jessica has worked on productions at BBC Wales, BBC Scotland and various independent design studios. Her first commissioned short film “Fixing Luka” was developed and produced by DigiCult as part of Scotland’s Digital Shorts 2010. The film received its premiere in 2011 and is currently traveling the international festival circuit (including Rushes). Fixing Luka recently won Scotland’s New Talent BAFTA for Best Original Score 2011, and Best Animation, Best Visual and Film of the Night at the Limelight Film and Arts Awards in London.

Anna Odell (Producer, Fixing Luka)
Anna studied Visual Communication at Chelsea College of Art & Design where she specialised in 2d Animation. Fixing Luka is her second stop frame short after previously producing DigiCult's 'Battenberg' (Dir: Stewart Comrie), a BAFTA Best Animation and Jim Poole award winner in 2009. As well as animation, Anna has production experience in motion graphics with studios including ISO (Glasgow), coordinating and producing content for broadcast and museums. Today - like many emerging producers aiming to establish themselves in British film - Anna is also currently on Job Seekers Allowance and living rent free in London. Good on you!

Paul Welsh (Chair)
Paul Welsh is an experienced commissioner & producer of live action and animated shorts, documentaries and features. His feature credits include Skeletons (Nick Whitfield), winner of the Michael Powell Award (EIFF 2010) and Lore (Cate Shortland), currently in production in Germany. Since 1997 - through GMAC, DigiCult, EM Media and working independently - Paul has developed, produced and executive produced over 50 short films, helping build the careers of many exciting UK filmmakers including Chris Waitt, Jessica Ashman, Joern Utkilen, Zam Salim, Peter Baynton, the Berties, Martin Smith, Michael Pearce and Stuart Comrie. Currently, Paul’s leading the development on Incubator, DigiCult’s Creative Scotland funded programme for emerging short and feature length talent.
