Deliberate Resistance: LGBT Prisoner Rights 20 Years After Farmer v. Brennan
Friday, November 14th
Jerome Greene Hall
Columbia Law School
435 W. 116th St.
Free and open to all
Breakfast and lunch provided
In 1994, the US Supreme Court upheld the right of prisoners to hold prison officials accountable for "deliberate indifference" to their safety. The case was brought by Dee Farmer, a transgender prisoner who experienced assault and abuse because of her gender identity. We commemorate Dee Farmer and all incarcerated persons who are resisting abusive and discriminatory practices in detention.
Deliberate Resistance will bring together advocates, grassroots activists, practitioners, criminal justice officials, lawyers, and scholars to discuss the legal legacy of Dee Farmer’s case, the movement to end sexual abuse in detention, housing and segregation, and health care for LGBT incarcerated persons.
Cosponsored by ACLU, Just Detention International, and the National Center for Transgender Equality.
Please also join us at the Arcus Forum on Thursday, November 13th for "Trans Rights and Criminal Justice Wrongs," a conversation on the experiences of trans people in the criminal justice system with CeCe McDonald, Kylar Broadus, Janetta Johnson, Shannon Minter, and Rashad Robinson.
