Event description

Description

The Institute for Public Administration’s Democracy Project at the University of Delaware will host the Delaware Summit on Civics Education on February 7, 2019.

Civics education has been marginalized in recent years at a time when America is becoming dangerously polarized. Moreover, only 23% of students scored at or above proficiency on the latest NAEP assessment of civics, a national report card that also revealed a disturbing achievement gap. The purposes of the summit are to learn more about the state of civics education in Delaware and the nation and to explore ways to improve the quality and quantity of K-12 civic education with an eye toward enacting a high-quality action plan for the First State. Those attending will help inform that action plan.

Dr. Peter Levine (Tufts University), author of We Are the Ones We Have Been Waiting For: The Promise of Civic Renewal in America will serve as a keynote speaker. Peter is one of the nation’s most respected voices in civics education having served as Deputy Director of the National Commission on Civic Renewal. He is now leading a major research effort that will offer recommendations for a path forward.

Educators, elected officials, policymakers, and others interested in improving the quality of civics education in Delaware are invited.
