Description

Lessons of the 2017 Hurricanes:
Learning from the past to prepare our communities for the future

2017 Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria inflicted devastating impacts on communities across the U.S. The sobering headlines coming from the affected regions raise questions as to what Delaware is prepared for, and what we can do with this new insight now in order to prepare for these types of natural hazards and more in the future. Coastal storms and climate change present great threats, but also great opportunities to plan and prepare, and to build resilient, livable, and sustainable communities.

Resiliency planning can reduce risk, improve services, adapt to changing conditions, and empower citizens to make sustainable choices. Across the state, communities, organizations, and governments at all levels are already taking steps to improve their ability to withstand and recover quickly from extreme weather events and adapt to the impacts of climate change. It is important to share successful approaches and build off of past partnerships so that we can take action on resilience challenges in our communities now before impacts occur.

To bring this timely topic to light, the Delaware Resilient and Sustainable Communities League (RASCL) is hosting its first Summit. The day will feature plenary and panel sessions with local experts that address the community-building aspects of resiliency as well as opportunities to network with subject matter experts and planning practitioners.

This conference invites participants from across all levels of government, including local community leaders and municipal officials as well as community supporting non-profit organizations, contractors and consultants, academia, and planners to:

• Hear the latest outlook on coastal storms and climate science from local experts;
• Hear from resiliency and preparedness subject matter experts on new programs and innovative ideas for addressing these risks
• Learn from municipal leaders and members of the Resilient and Sustainable Communities League about their experiences with increasing community preparedness and sustainability
• Help identify knowledge gaps and opportunities for beneficial projects that meet community needs and collaborators abilities related to resilient and sustainable projects.
• Meet others working on the same community preparedness issues and potential future project collaborators.

An agenda overview is available here. Stay tuned for confirmed speaker updates!

We also will provide networking opportunities to foster future project opportunities throughout the day, including an exhibitor session following the presentations.

We hope that you will be able to join us in this important dialog on new opportunities for community resiliency and sustainability!
