Description
Take Up Space 2018: Defying Dualities is an interactive art event featuring 31 black and white illustrations of interviews with women exploring female contradictions.
Growing up, girls are expected to embody multiple expectations, which are often contradicting and follow them into adulthood. We should be sexy, but not a slut. We should be emotional, but not crazy. We should speak our minds, but make sure everyone in the room is comfortable. Defying Dualities aims to spread awareness that women don't need to live within the confines of a black and white world.
Defying Dualities is this year's theme for Take Up Space. Founded by Bianca Ng, Take Up Space is an annual visual storytelling project that celebrates everyday female voices. Every year Ng collects and artistically translates 31 stories to share during Women's History Month in March. She investigates a nuanced topic specific to the female psyche. Last year's theme was Who is Your Shero?
At this event, the original artwork will be on display and for sale. Audiences will gain first access to limited handmade goods for purchase (handmade totes, limited edition art prints, stickers, pins). The ticket includes food and one drink. The participants and the audience will have a unique opportunity to connect and share their experiences through vulnerable storytelling.

Wonton In A Million
Home of the Steam Team, Wonton In A Million is an Etsy store that creates stationery products inspired by everyone's favorite weekend meal—dimsum! The founder and designer Cynthia Koo grew up eating the cuisine at Oriental Garden, of which her dad has been the manager for over 30 years and which became the site of inspiration for Wonton In A Million when, in 2015, the idea for punny dimsum greeting cards popped into her head. Since then, Wonton In A Million has built a full suite of dimsum-inspired products sold both online and in store and has become a brand that counts as its core missions the support of women entrepreneurs everywhere and the re-energization of New York City's Chinatown.
Oriental Garden Restaurant
Eater calls Oriental Garden the restaurant "where your favorite chefs eat on their days off." Home of the freshest seafood in Chinatown, this local Chinatown favorite counts chefs like David Chang, Eddie Huang, and David Bouley among its regulars. They specialize in fresh seafood straight from the tanks and serve Cantonese banquet dishes you can't get anywhere outside of Hong Kong—so come in for their juicy dimsum, or bring a group of friends and try out their Lobster Country Style over e-fu noodles (David Chang's favorite!).
