Description
Born and raised in Berlin, the New York-based singer and composer Defne Şahin is rapidly developing an international reputation as a versatile and creative performer, who draws influences from time spent immersed in different countries and cultures. At a young age Defne has extended stays in Turkey, Spain, Brazil and the US under her belt, and is equally at home singing jazz, bossa nova, pop and Mediterranean traditional music.
Her debut album Yaşamak, that features evocative settings of Nâzım Hikmet’s poetry, was released by Germany’s highly esteemed Jazz periodical, Jazz Thing Next Generation on Double Moon Records and by the Kalan Müzik label in Turkey.
Yaşamak (to live) is as free as Nâzım Hikmet’s words, always in search of vastness, merging the young singer’s Turkish roots with the sound of Jazz and was dubbed "the beginning of a successful career“ - Jazzthetik.
Together with Shai Maestro on piano, Hans Glaschwig on bass and Ziv Ravitz on drums she will be presenting songs from her album and her own interpretations of Brazilian and American Standards.
After studying at the Universität der Künste in Berlin and the Escola Superior de Música in Barcelona, Defne received her Master of Music degree in Vocal Jazz Performance at the prestigious Manhattan School of Music. She was awarded a substantial scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service, from the Heinrich Böll Foundation and from Manhattan School of Music.
“A singer with a cosmopolitan, literate approach to jazz.”
