Description

Defend the Honor – Ten Years Later

In 2007, Latinos (and others) throughout the country protested Ken Burns’ PBS 14.5-hour WWII documentary, The War, that included NO Latino voices. A grassroots group emerged, Defend the Honor.

Burns relented… sort of. But the issue was larger than one documentarian or the Public Broadcasting System. Ten years later, Defend the Honor asks: What was gained? What was lost? What has changed?

Please join us for this important community discussion.

When: Saturday, Oct. 28th, 2017

Time: 1-5 p.m.

Where: Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center, 600 River St., Austin, TX 78701

Speakers: Latina/o World War II veterans and civilians; Gus Chavez and Maggie Rivas-Rodriguez, Defend the Honor co-chairs; documentarian Hector Galán; Hector Cantu, creator of the Baldo cartoon, which in 2007 featured an homage to Latino World War II veterans (posters will be available); and two executives from the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) - and more!
