Event description
The Defence Forces will host a night of music and culture in the Radisson BLU Hotel Athlone in aid of two worthwhile causes.

About this Event

On Thursday, 22nd August 2019, the Defence forces in association with the Radisson BLU Hotel Athlone, will host a Gala Benefit Concert. In addition to providing an enjoyable evening of music and culture, the primary purpose of the event is to raise much needed funds for charity.

For this event our chosen beneficiaries will be; South Weastmeath Hospice and ONE (Organisation of National Ex-servicemen) Fuchsia Appeal.

Raphaela Mangan

Raphaela has trained as a mezzo soprano, obtaining a record breaking First Class Honours Degree from the Conservatory of Music and Drama, Dublin and a Post Graduate Distinction from the Flanders Opera Studio, Belgium. Her singing career has seen her perform across the UK and Europe, where to date she has performed roles such as: ‘Bradamante’ in Alcina, ‘Ottavia’ in L’incoronazione di Poppea, ‘Marcelina’ in The Marriage of Figaro, ‘Genevieve’ in Pelleas et Melisande, ‘Idamante’ in Idomeneo, ‘Glasha’ & ‘Varvara’ in Katya Kabanova, ‘Buttercup’ in HMS Pinafore, ‘Euridice’ in L’anima del Filosofo, ‘Olga’ in Eugene Onegin and ‘Mrs Lovett’ in Sweeney Todd. At home, some of Raphaela’s performances include; ‘Carmen’ in Carmen, ‘Cherubino’ in The Marriage of Figaro, ‘Orfeo’ in Orfeo ed Euridice, ‘Tessa’ in The Gondoliers, ‘Bianca’ in The Rape of Lucretia and ‘Penelope’ in Monteverdi’s The Return of Ulysses. A regular in the field of concert and oratorio, Raphaela’s most noted concert performances in Ireland are with the RTE National Symphony & Concert Orchestra at the National Concert Hall, CoOrch at the Olympia Theatre and The Fleischmann Symphony at City Hall, Cork. Away from home Raphaela has performed in concert at venues such as The Usher Hall, The McEwan Hall and the Linbury Hall, Royal Opera House, UK. She has also performed with the Irish Baroque Orchestra and sung with the leading Choral Societies of Ireland and the UK often performing works such as Verdi’s Requiem and Handel’s Messiah.

Band 2 Brigade (Athlone)

Band 2 Brigade (Athlone) The Army No. 4 Band was formed in 1936 and has been located at Custume Barracks Athlone since that time. The band supports the military ceremonial of 2 Brigade serving the upper half of the country ranging from Wicklow as far north as Donegal. The band performs a wide range of military, state and civilian engagements each year and has been recognised for many years as being an integral part of the cultural life of the midlands and west of Ireland. The band has the distinction, unique among Irish military bands, of having served a six-month tour with a United Nations Mission – i.e. UNFICYP (Cyprus) in 1966. During this tour the band played at over one hundred events for the Greek and Turkish communities on the island. Also uniquely it was the first Defence Forces band to perform in the United Kingdom when it played at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall. More recently the band’s visits abroad include performances at festivals, parades and tattoos in France, Lebanon and Belgium.

Athlone A Capella

Lead by musical director David Farmer, Athlone A Cappella are a 50+ strong group of Ladies, based in Athlone, but who draw their membership from across the Irish Midlands. They perform a cappella style 4-part close harmony, and are the 3 times National Barbershop Female Chorus Champions. They have previously travelled all over Ireland, and abroad, performing their rich and varied repertoire, which includes songs from the ‘Musical Theatre’, ‘Jazz’ and ‘Popular’ music of the day.
