About this Event

Description

Do you have some experience or training in data in journalism, but want to sharpen your skills with new ideas, sources and techniques?

This new one-day course, designed as a follow-up to London Freelance Branch’s ‘Introduction to data in journalism’, is aimed at you.

The day will include the following:

  • Data on places and people: where to find reliable demographic and economic information, both on areas of the UK and countries around Europe and the world. This section will also cover some key things such information tells us, such as the real size of London and the surprising ways in which the world is getting better;
  • What tech companies are good for: Google and other huge technology companies can be a good source of data, as long as you are selective and know their limitations;
  • Better data visualisation: there are many ways to chart data, in terms of types of graph and maps and the online systems and software that support them. Discover some of the leading options and the ways to get the best out of them;
  • The language of data: numbers and words do not always mix, and it can be hard to make data journalism read well. Learn techniques to bring data to life in what you write.

Those attending will need to bring their own laptop or a tablet device with a keyboard. Some exercises will require a larger screen than a smartphone.

Tutor: SA Mathieson has led training on data journalism for the NUJ, the Press Association, and the Office for National Statistics and has lectured at City Lit, Birmingham City University and Westminster University. He recently taught a term-long Masters course on data in journalism at Birkbeck, University of London.

Max. students: 16

The course fee includes tea and coffee breaks.

NUJ student members/temporary members £45; NUJ members £55; Non-members £110.
