The number of imports and exports at the Port of Galveston increased exponentially during the late 19th century and blossomed after Galveston gained her Deep Water harbor, giving rise to some of Texas’s strongest labor unions. Clifford Farrington’s book, Biracial Unions on Galveston’s Waterfront, 1865-1925, examines the often overlooked community of workers along Galveston’s docks, specifically discussing the racial tensions among the longshoremen unions. Readers can join GHF at the 1838 Menard House for a lively discussion of the book including their opinons, likes and dislikes.
