Event description

Description

Deep Soulful Sweats is an energetic astro-dance party founded on the 2013 winter solstice by Melbourne based choreographers Rebecca Jensen and Sarah Aiken. DDS is a participatory event, a performance, a dance, an improvisation, body pump, a mindfulness rave, a school spectacular and a visit to a psychic all rolled into one, in an immersive ritual that encourages participants to come together and lose themselves in movement. Our mantra: Exorcise through exercise.

Deep Soulful Sweats is for anyone and everyone (14+ years) -no dance or performance experience is necessary and no steps will be learned. All you have to do is register, and show up in comfortable shoes ready to get a bit sweaty, make believe and fake believe.

Participants are divided into four element groups based on star signs. Each group is guided by their astro-goddess through a landscape of bangers mixed by super special guest DJs. DDS smears together paganism and pop culture. This October at Tempo Festival we’ll celebrate Bacchus - god of the theatrical arts, parties and radical togetherness - as well as a little bit of the New Zealand-made teenage TV drama The Tribe.

We’ll run through and get tangled up in the grape vines, practicing presence and collectivity. These uncertain times build community in the face of adversity and burst forth light from the shadows of a looming dystopian future, forming our own society through movement, chanting, fantasy and absurdity.

"equal parts a parody and a celebration of New Age and rave cultures...the cleverness is in how ambiguous the line is between absurdity and genuine yogic practice" -The West Australian, 2017
