Pauline Oliveros is the founder of “Deep Listening” which was inspired by her childhood fascination with sounds, and from her works in concert music with composition, improvisation and electro-acoustics. Anne Bourne was one of the first six who received a Certificate to teach Deep Listening during Pauline Oliveros’ 10 year series of Deep Listening Retreats on Rose Mountain in New Mexico. The Center for Deep Listening is now housed in the School of Humanities at Rensellaer Polytechnic Institute in NY. The mission of the center is to steward the continued development of artistic expression, humanitarian scholarship, and understanding of human perception and cognition begun by Oliveros with her innovative deep listening practice decades ago.
The practice of Deep Listening is intended to heighten awareness of sound, silence and sounding. Compelled by Oliveros’ listening practices and text scores as active/receptive techniques of composition, Bourne will engage participants in energy exercises, listening meditation, improvisation and performance of Deep Listening pieces.
