Join us Saturday, April 6, from 1:00 to 4:00, for a family-friendly exploration of Deep Ellum. We'll gather found text, images, and field notes as we scout this exciting neighborhood for clues about local history, architecture, culture, and art. We'll explore colorful murals and landmarks, pop through interesting doors to visit unique shops and stops, and play writing games to transform our findings into poetry. We'll begin our excursion at a meeting point soon to be announced, and end by sharing a meal at a local restaurant, and sharing poems in a flash reading. Our adventures are designed to spark lively conversations, and fascinate parents and younger adventurers alike. Participants should be old enough to take part in an afternoon of exploring, writing, and covering significant ground on foot -- we suggest ages ten and up. Wear sunscreen and comfortable walking shoes, and plan on pocket money for periodic snack stops and a meal out. You might also like to bring your favorite lucky pen or pencil, though we'll have some handy as well. Each participant will go home with a unique handmade book full of images, observations and writings created on this exciting day!

Please note: All youth must be accompanied by an adult.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR:

Lisa Huffaker is a poet, musician, and visual artist. Her poems appear in Southwest Review, Poet Lore, Measure, Able Muse, Southern Humanities Review, and elsewhere. Her project, White Rock Zine Machine, offers tiny books by Dallas-area writers and artists, sold through whimsical vending machines. She is a classical singer by training, and sings with the Dallas Opera. She served as a Visiting Artist at the Dallas Museum of Art last summer, where her installation, Sound/re:Vision, invited visitors to interact with a music box Zine Machine, compose chance music, and create zines inspired by a playlist ranging from opera to gamelan.
