Event description
Explore Brazilian zouk body mechanics and connection principles with guest instructors Jerry Lai and Devon Near-Hill!

About this Event

We're excited to be hosting this weekend of workshops with visiting instructors Jerry Lai & Devon Near-Hill from Los Angeles, CA!

Deconstructing Zouk is a progressive intensive workshop that breaks down the fundamentals of Brazilian Zouk into anatomical groups. Jerry starts from the ground up, with a class on groundedness, emphasizing the foot, ankle, and knees - how and when we use each part through the different fundamental movements. He then moves up the body, focusing on the hips, torso, and summarizing the physical relationship of all the first three groups. Finally, he introduces his theory of frame that can be applied to all partner dances

For more detail on each of these workshops see the descriptions below.

1 GROUNDEDNESS (Friday, 9:30-11pm)

We’ve all heard that we need to be more grounded, but what does it actually mean? Brazilian Zouk has both indigenous and European roots that require the use of different ankle, knee, and hip. We will focus on these three joints, study how the articulation of these joints affect the way we step and how to differentiate between the three steps (impulse, control, preparation) in Brazilian Zouk. We will study how we can produce a smooth interplay between compression and extension with the ground, and how to navigate between active and passive moments within the basic step.

2 HIPS (Saturday, 1-2:30pm)

Due to its roots in Lambada, the ‘Brazilian Hip’ became an essential characteristic of Brazilian Zouk. It holds the center of our weight and is often the originator of movements in Zouk. We will breakdown how our hips act as a pendulum in the basics to enable smooth weight transfers and transitions between steps. When utilized properly, our hips hold the secret to both physical and mental flow, where our movements flow continuously into each other. Leaders will learn how to ‘read’ the follow’s hips in order to adjust their leading to help follows achieve flow.

3 TORSION (Saturday, 3-4:30pm)

As Brazilian Zouk evolved beyond Lambada, more emphasis was placed on a dynamic upper body movement. We will explore how to use our natural contra-body movement to enhance our basics, improving both fluidity and clarity of leading and following with our torso and elbows. Allowing body torsion to happen during our basics help us stay balanced, dissipate excessive momentum into our body, execute pre-movement for turns, spins, and laterals. It also allows the different levels of the body to connect with segmentation, transferring rotational momentum either up or down our spine.

4 FRAME (Sunday, 12:15-1:45pm)

In any form of partner dancing, a good form should be comfortable, clear, three-dimensional, and not overpowering. We will explore the difference between active and passive frame, the difference between tone and pressure, and exactly how and when you should activate frame. We discuss the physics of a good frame for front-back, lateral, rotational, and vertical leading and following. Then we will discuss how there exists a sphere of neutrality, where the act of non-doing allows the follow to listen more closely to what the lead is proposing.
