“The Final Years of Pilgrimage: Sketches and Sources for Liszt’s
Années de pèlerinage, Troisiéme Année
David H. Plylar, PhD, Music Division

The Library of Congress holds significant manuscript materials for one of Liszt’s most important piano cycles: the third and final book of the Années de pèlerinage (Years of Pilgrimage). We will take a close look at some of Liszt’s earlier ideas and listen to alternative thoughts, exploring the creative process that yielded these visionary late works. The Library acquired one of these manuscripts in 2016 (Den Cypressen der Villa d’Este), and this will mark its first public appearance at the Library. Featured pieces include:

Années de pèlerinage, Troisiéme Année:
1. Angélus! Prière aux anges gardiens
2. Aux cyprès de la Villa d'Este I: Thrénodie
3. Aux cyprès de la Villa d'Este II: Thrénodie
5. Sunt lacrymae rerum

Additional Ticketing Information
Seating is first-come, first-served for patrons with a reservation. For best seating options, patrons are encouraged to arrive fifteen minutes before the scheduled start of the event. At five minutes before the start of the event, all empty seats will be available on a first-come, first served basis to all patrons. Because of the limited space in the venue, we encourage patrons who are unable to obtain a reservation to add their name to the waitlist; it is possible that events may be repeated if there is sufficiently high interest.
