Event description

Description

Few topics in law enforcement cause more public scrutiny than police use of force. Current research suggests that increased scrutiny may be causing police officers to be more reluctant to use force, even when it is lawful. This course is designed to increase public trust and decrease both agency and officer liability exposure, by giving officers evidence based tools to make reasonable decisions, while simultaneously ensuring both officer and public safety.

Designed primarily for line officers and supervisors, this compressive course examines what happens before; during; and after a use of force incident. This course answers questions like: How does the law affect decision-making? What human performance factors influence decisions? What should I expect when the smoke clears? Are there ways to increase safety during incidents? Through guided discussion, video analysis, and case studies, participants will explore:

Application of Force – Current Trends

Five Use of Force Court Cases Every Officer Should Know

De-escalation: What Does the Science Say?

Human Performance Factors Affecting Decision Making

Creating Reaction Time During Use of Force Incidents

Report Writing – C.Y.A (Can You Articulate?)

Video: The Good, the Bad, the Ugly

Preparing for the Aftermath of Use of Force
