What: Nature-based day program for homeschooling and unschooling families.

Where: Middlebury Area Land Trust (MALT) will lead programs in Means Woods and Chipman Hill, using the Aurora Learning Center as our base for drop off, pick up, and inclement weather days.

When: One program per month, always on the 1st Wednesday of the month.

Fees: $25/student, $15/additional sibling

About our instructor: MALT's lead educator will be Jamie Montague. Jamie serves the greater Middlebury community as MALT's Executive Director. With an Environmental Science degree from the University of Rochester and a Master’s of Natural Resource Management from the University Centre of the Westfjords in Iceland, Jamie brings a love of connecting people with science and nature. She taught as a naturalist in the Adirondacks, coordinated Citizen Science and Education programs in Washington state, and most recently served as the Education Director at Audubon Vermont. Jamie sneaks out of the office to spend time with our local youth in nature. It's one of the most important parts of her job! Connecting children with the lands that MALT conserves is a magical experience and it makes her role at MALT full-circle.Jamie thrives on the challenge of inspiring others to live as stewards of the environment and gets particularly excited about maple syrup and fall colors! She has taught ages birth to adult in nature-based programs for a decade and is looking forward to mentoring your children this fall!

What does a day of nature-based programming look like? We'll begin with a morning welcome cirlce, some nature-based games, and a focus on relevant/interesting seasonal themes. Monthly topics include exploring what animals are doing to get ready for winter, fire building, orienteering with maps and compass, exploring food webs, and shelter building. Sprinkled in between, there will certainly be mud painting, fairy homes, and story telling around our camp fire.

To bring: Full water bottle, back pack, lunch, and snack. Dress for the weather and always send students with a change of clothes. Fall weather means cool mornings and warm afternoons, so layers are best! Jamie will send an email to all participants the week before the program to confirm details such as location, theme, and any other important notes.
