Speakers: Janis Cowhey and Crystal Levy


What is today’s “Modern Family”? Janis and Crystal will discuss some of the unique and complex estate planning needs and opportunities of the Modern Family.


In Janis and Crystal’s presentation, you will learn:

  • Recognizing the Modern Family (It is not as obvious as it seems!)
  • What estate planning documents any Modern Family, individual or couple should have in place
  • Legal consequences of not planning
  • Tax planning opportunities available to Modern Families


About the Speakers

Janis Cowhey

Janis Cowhey is a Partner in the Marcum’s New York City office. She is a member of its Trusts and Estates Practice Group and the Leader of its Modern Family & LGBT Services Practice Group. Her focus is on complex estate, gift and income tax planning; estate and trust administration; planning for same-sex couples and unmarried couples; individual and fiduciary tax compliance.


Ms. Cowhey has developed an expertise in working with domestic partners and non-traditional families including same-sex married couples and unmarried couples. She provides income tax planning as well as tax return compliance. She assists LGBT individuals, couples and families navigate through the complex and rapidly changing tax and legal landscape of estate, gift, and income tax planning.


Prior to joining the Firm in 2007, Ms. Cowhey was with a publicly-traded professional services company. She frequently lectures on topics related to estate and gift tax issues; estate planning strategies; and LGBT estate and income tax issues. She has appeared on TV and quoted in print media including the New York Times, as an expert on LGBT issues.



Crystal Levy

Crystal Levy is a Senior Associate in the Firm’s New York City office. She focuses on estate planning for a wide range of clients from young families to high-net-worth individuals. Additionally, she works closely with fiduciaries through the complete estate/trust administration process.


Mrs. Levy also prepares and files the necessary documents relating to corporate matters such as forming, transferring, reorganizing, dissolving and merging Corporations and Limited Liability Companies, as well as the drafting of the shareholder, partnership and operating agreements.


In addition, Mrs. Levy has experience in real estate as well as related party transfers for estate planning and gifting purposes. Prior to becoming an attorney, Mrs. Levy began her legal career as a paralegal for 10 years.
