The Federal Practice Seminar is intended for attorneys new to practicing law in the Southern District of Ohio.

About this Event

The United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio Federal Practice Seminar is open to all attorneys, including those already admitted to practice in the Southern District of Ohio and is required for those seeking admission. This seminar is designed to prepare participants for practice in the Southern District of Ohio. Speakers will discuss practice before the Magistrate and District Judges, as well as practice in Bankruptcy Court. Speakers will also discuss the Local Rules, the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure, and the Federal Rules of Criminal Procedure.

All attorneys seeking admission to the bar of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio MUST attend this seminar. In addition, all attorneys seeking admission must complete an application for admission to the Bar pursuant to Local Rule 83.3(c)(1). The application and information for mailing that to the Clerk's Office of the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio can be found on their website at: http://www.ohsd.uscourts.gov/attorney-admission

The Swearing In of newly admitted attorneys will take place at the conclusion of the Federal Practice Seminar.

Attendees will receive 3.0 hours of general CLE credit approved by the Supreme Court of Ohio.

9:00 – 9:40 -- Civil Practice in the Southern District of Ohio by Shawn Judge, Of Counsel with the law firm of Isaac Wiles and Stephanie Rawlings, Career Law Clerk to the Honorable George C. Smith, U.S. District Court, Southern District of Ohio

9:40 – 9:50 -- Case Management and Electronic Filing Presentation by Scott Miller with the Clerk's Office

9:50 – 10:35 -- Criminal Practice in the Southern District of Ohio by Steve Nolder, Scott & Nolder Law Firm

10:35 – 10:50 -- Break

10:50 – 11:30 -- Practicing in Bankruptcy Court in the Southern District of Ohio by Judith M. McInturff, Esq., Director of Continuing Legal Education for the Columbus Bar Association

11:30 – 12:15 -- View from the Bench with Chief Judge Algenon L. Marbley, Judge Sarah D. Morrison, and Magistrate Judge Kimberly A. Jolson (Judges on panel may change depending on trial schedules)

12:15 -- Swearing In Ceremony

Yes, please bring a state ID with you to attend this event.

What's the refund policy?

If you are unable to attend the registered Federal Practice Seminar, you may attend the next Seminar (held in June and December each year), please contact Michelle Rahwan at (614) 719-3222 to transfer your registration.

Or, you may attend a Seminar in one of the other cities in the Southern District of Ohio -- Cincinnati or Dayton, however, those are run by separate FBA chapters and we are unable to transfer your registration.

Do I have to bring my printed ticket to the event?

It is recommended that you bring a printed copy or electronic receipt of your registration to ensure admittance on the day of the event.

Is it ok if the name on my ticket or registration doesn't match the person who attends?

No, this seminar is for CLE credit, therefore your name must match the ticket registration. Please Note: It is preferred that the attendee purchase his/her own ticket. If someone other than the attendee is is purchasing the ticket, please add the attendees name in the comments section of the registration/order form.

If you are a current FBA member or join the FBA prior to registering for this Seminar, you may attend for $50. If you recently joined, please forward the email confirmation you received from the FBA to stephanie_rawlings@ohsd.uscourts.gov and then you can mail your $50 check made payable to the Federal Bar Association to:
