Description

M.S. Athlete, Susan Simmons: Twenty Five years ago Susan Simmons was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis (MS), an unpredictable disease characterized by fatigue, motor weakness, spasticity and poor balance. In Susan’s case she also became temporarily blind in one eye.

Following medical advice Susan sought to manage her illness by minimizing her emotional and physical stress - she worked from home and didn’t exercise. Unfortunately her health worsened and Susan feared she’d soon be in a wheelchair.

Realizing if she were to ever to pull out of this downward spiral it would be up to her, Susan decided to implement some changes. The first was switching to a vegan diet in order to preserve her body’s energy; something vital for her second change:

Susan decided to begin swimming beginning with short distances in swimming pools. Before long she moved to lakes, eventually graduating to the open waters of the ocean where she has trained and swam ever since.

Today Susan is medication free, works full-time outside the home and manages her condition through a strict diet and by regular open-water long distance swimming.

In July 2017 Susan achieved her greatest athletic accomplishment to date: Assisted by her team she swam the Juan de Fuca Strait (34 kilometers) in 10 hours and 6 minutes; the fastest crossing of the strait to date. Even more astonishing is she did it without wearing a wetsuit; only a swimsuit, cap and goggles!

Join us to hear Susan’s truly inspiring story of drive, determination and commitment of how she went from being a literal shut-in to world-class athlete.

Plus Memory Collector, Deborah LeFrank: We’ve all had unique experiences, adventures and life-changing moments; however, by the time middle age rolls around, simply remembering memories often isn’t enough. As part of our legacy, we want to have them to share with future generations.

Through her company Visual Life Stories, Deborah LeFrank is on a mission to help people collect their precious memories, and then use them to create living, breathing timelines for loved ones to have for now, and generations to come.

In the past we’ve all seen Deborah furiously scribbling away in the front rows of our events creating remarkable visual stories of Inspired Victoria talks which she calls “sketchnotes”.

Join Deborah as she shares stories and her key tips for collecting memories and milestones, so that we too can create our legacies… Only at Inspired Victoria!
