Description

Deborah: Prophet, Judge, Leader of the Jewish People

Topic for the November 13 session of "Torah for Everyone" series

Most of us know little about Deborah, who was a prophet, judge, and leader of the Jewish people following the death of Moses. She was a heroine like no other in the Hebrew Bible, acting in several important capacities that demonstrated her wisdom and charisma.

Led by Rabbi Bridget Wynne in an open environment, we'll explore the story of Deborah, the status of women at that time, and how the social and religious decline of Israelite society directly corresponds to the worsened well-being of the female characters we read about.

About the Series

Are you curious about what's actually in the Torah, and whether it might be meaningful to you? While the Torah, and its continuation in the Hebrew Bible, are core texts of Jewish tradition, they can appear intimidating, irrelevant, boring, or even offensive.

Yet looked at from a sophisticated, adult perspective, rather than the literal understanding or children’s stories we may have experienced, these texts can be a rich source of wisdom for grappling with today’s real-life issues: ethics, family, work, politics, money, happiness …

Join us to experience the Torah and its continuation in the Hebrew Bible, plus relevant commentaries, in this twice-monthly class led by Rabbi Bridget Wynne in an open environment. Each session focuses on a specific portion of the text and relevant issues it brings up.

No prior experience or knowledge of Hebrew is required.

WHEN: We meet twice monthly on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, 7:00-9:00pm, October-June, with some exceptions due to holidays, including in October due to Yom Kippur.

Come for one session, a few, or the entire series. See below for dates.

WHERE: We meet in Berkeley.

WHO: Newcomers of all ages and backgrounds are always welcome. You don't need to be Jewish to draw on Jewish wisdom. Please feel free to invite friends who may be interested.

HOW: The fee for the series of 14 sessions is $350, a discount of $70 compared to the per-session fee. The $350 fee may be paid in one sum or divided into installments. To select the installments option, pay the deposit of $50 when you register and we will contact you to pay the remainder in installments.

Alternatively, you may choose those sessions that are convenient for you and pay separately for each session you attend. The fee per session is $30.
