Event description
Design History Society pre-conference programme. DHS 2021: Memory Full? Reimagining the relations between design and history.

About this event

Dear penpal… meet and greet is a community building session for everyone interested in, or curious about, design history: the shy, the geeky, the chatty. In this session, we will meet each other individually for quick rounds of informal chats about our writing interests, projects, hopes and, perhaps, insecurities?

All participants will be given the option of exchanging contact details during and prior to the event — it would be so lovely to see pairs of penpals coming out of this session: perhaps a couple of people would like to team up for friendly peer-review? Others might like to exchange postcards!

As an ice-breaker, please bring to this session one object related to “memory-full” or “forget-full” — maybe an unforgettable object, something full of memories or, conversely, an object that has been forgotten (or found!) somewhere. Conversation starters will be provided throughout the session, to keep momentum going. In the end, we will meet as a whole group again for a last view of our memory-full objects.

We are keen to facilitate participation of people in all time zones, so if the time of this event is not looking good for you, please book a place regardless: after booking, participants will be given the option of sending their contributions before the day of the event. This way, we can start sharing our “memory full” objects with each other via social media. All contributions will also feature in a pop-up digital archive. Keep an eye out for it here: dhs.studentforum.online

This event is free and open to everyone, those registered and those not registered for the 2021 DHS Annual Conference. For those attending the conference, this session could be a great way of getting to know each other. For those not attending the conference, you are still very welcome to join in! It should be fun.

Organizer Design History Society — DHS Student Forum

Organizer of Dear penpal... meet and greet

The Design History Society will host three events led by students and early career researchers in response to the theme of the DHS 2021 Annual ConferenceMemory Full? Reimagining the relations between design and history”. A combination of community building and hands-on workshops will explore the playful, yet critical, motto “forget-full?” — a reference to students’ discussions about material practices that produce erasure, ostracism, forgetfulness.

Outcomes of these events will populate a pop-up digital archive. Keep an eye out for it! If the times of the events are not looking good for you, please book a place regardless: everyone will be given the option of participating asynchronously, by sending in early contributions.

All activities are free and open to everyone (those registered and those not registered for the conference), but participants must book via Eventbrite in advance. On the days of the events, we will operate a Zoom’s waiting room. Please come a few minutes early, as each session has a limited number of places that will be filled on a first come, first served basis. We promise to do our best to squeeze everyone in though.
