Event description
Dean Friedman performs songs and tells stories about all the surreal stuff that's befallen American - and the world - these past six years.

About this event

Acclaimed singer-songwriter, Dean Friedman premiers his powerful new album, ‘American Lullaby’ in a ninety minute 'virtual' performance , 'livestreamed' to a Zoom audience, combining storytelling and song to explore the bewildering political, cultural and global health disasters America - and the world - has endured these past six years.

Like all lullabies, the show is filled with tales of dark deeds and disaster, but couched in soft, gentle tones, leavened with humor and a healthy dose of silliness, meant to soothe and comfort the listener, while gently bracing them for the potential terrors that await.

The show, structured around the album's songs (with a few familiar hits mixed in), touches on a broad range of topics, including: the calamitous pandemic, looming environmental disaster, racism, sexism, and an intractable culture war… all exacerbated by our inane and disastrous politics.

In his inimitable way, Friedman explores these dark topics with a deft mixture of seriousness, whimsy and joy. The show is filled with optimism and faith – not in any god, but in our common humanity and the conviction that for those of us lucky enough to have survived the recent cataclysms, it’s incumbent upon us, to not just work to heal our wounded world but, to seize every chance we get to celebrate wonder… and propagate joy.
