Event description

Description

The keys to preventing the effects of vicarious trauma are to recognize symptoms and behaviors that indicate a professional is being impacted by stress and trauma and to learn about and access self-care tools and resources to maintain mental and physical wellness and build resilience as a first responder and/or helping professional.

This half-day MCOLES registered conference will provide some basic information about what vicarious trauma is and how to know when it is impacting you or your staff, as well as some self-care tips. The keynote address by Derik Van Baale, an Iraq war veteran and suicide prevention coordinator at the Department of Veteran's Affairs, will give an overview of the issue. Our panel of helping professionals and first responders will further explore the impact of stress and trauma and how first responders and helping professionals can care for themselves effectively. The panel will include police, fire, child welfare, and mental health professionals, and an ER nurse.

We will end with a round table discussion to identify resources and supports needed to better address vicarious trauma in our community.
