Dealing with Disaster

With catastrophic natural disasters plummeting various corners of the earth, we are only beginning to grasp the destruction man has generated on his own affairs. The recent tsunami in Japan is but a single example of such extensive devastation.

Our responsibility as Muslims not only prompts us to comprehend the situation but also to act on what we know to help ourselves and to help humanity for the sake of Allah Most High. Anticipating our fresh and forthcoming class, “Islam and the Environment,” please join three of Sunnipath’s highly acclaimed scholars for a live event this Sunday to analyze and discuss the perilous and looming environmental crisis.

Also, don’t forget to register for the exciting and timely new course: “Islam and the Environment.”

Join us this Sunday, April 3rd to continue this discussion with Shaikh Sohail Hanif, Shaikh Hamza Karamali, and Shaikh Qays Arthur.

About Our Teachers

Shaykh Hamza Karamali

With a passion for creating "real scholarship," Shaykh Hamza Karamali himself is a reflection of this type of scholarship with his comprehensive knowledge of all the Islamic disciplines, sensitivity to the modern context, and eloquence.

Shaykh Hamza has been studying the Islamic sciences with leading scholars for over ten years. He has received personal instruction in the disciplines of theology, Islamic law, legal maxims, Sufism, hadith, tafsir, legal methodology, hadith methodology, logic, Arabic grammar, Arabic morphology, Arabic rhetoric, Arabic lexicology, tajwid, and the canonical recitations of the Quran. He has memorized the Quran, as well as versified technical manuals of several religious disciplines.

He has applied his uniquely comprehensive religious training and his deep familiarity with Western thought and culture to developing the four main SunniPath curricula: Foundations, Seekers, Miftah, and Sibawayh. He is admired by his students for his dedication, motivational speaking, eloquence, and teaching skills.

Shaykh Hamza writes frequently for the SunniPath Blog and SunniPath Answers Service, and his answers are famous for their depth and understanding. He is currently working on publishing a series of books for learning Arabic, a commentary on the creed of Imam Tahawi, and a contemporary commentary on the Waraqat of Imam al-Juwayni.

“Shaykh Hamza has a tremendous amount of taqwa. He has the right view about life. This is why this course was so successful. It's because of the way he is.”
—Naielah Ackbarali, Student, Damascus, Syria

“I loved Sheikh Hamza for his teaching style and his ability to explain complex issues in a way that is easy to understand and for also clarifying and guiding us towards what we really need to know rather than what we think we need to know. I also thank him and hope Allah blesses and rewards him, not only for the mountain of knowledge he was able to impart on us, but for the patience he showed in answering questions and giving advice. Jazakallahu khairan Sheikh Hamza.”
—Simon Dewar, IT Professional, Canberra, Australia

Shaykh Sohail Hanif

Shaykh Sohail Hanif is one of our best-loved scholars, whose kindness, sincerity, good humour and warmth resonate through all his teachings. Having spent most of his life in England and the Middle East, he is well-equipped with deep religious knowledge as well as sensitivity towards the modern context. He brings to his lessons a profound love for Allah and His Messenger, peace be upon him, and is a very patient instructor—no question is trivial, and every student is valued.

Shaykh Sohail has studied with numerous scholars in Amman, Jordan. He has studied Hanafi fiqh with Shaykh Faraz Rabbani, Dr. Salah Abul Haj, Shaykh Ashraf Muneeb, and Shaykh Ahmad al Jammal and Usul al-fiqh with Shaykh Ashraf. He studied introductory hadith sciences with Shaykh Muhammad al-Ya'qubi and is continuing his studies with Shaykh Hamza al Bakri. He studied aqida with Shaykh Muhammad al Ta'wil of the Qarawiyyin, Shaykh 'Isa Rabih, and Shaykh 'Abdul Qadir al 'Ani, a reputed 'Iraqi scholar and one of the authors of the renowned Kuwaiti Fiqh Encyclopedia.

For Arabic grammar, Shaykh Sohail studied with Shaykh 'Abdul Hayy al 'Imrawi of the Qarawiyyin and Shaykh 'Ali Hani, with whom he also studied tafsir.

Shaykh Sohail taught Arabic grammar at the Qasid Institute of Arabic language in Amman for five years, where he was also the head of the sciences section of the Classical Arabic department.

“Sheikh Sohail provided great spiritual insight to the seemingly small matters in which we are required to follow specific rulings. He was patient, and willing to repeat things, and treated all students with respect and and good humour. I do not have enough good words to explain what a pleasure it was to study this material with someone like this.”
—Kate Fryer, Research Speech Therapist, Sheffield, UK

“Shaykh Sohail was amazing, very knowledgeable and explained concepts well. I plan to take other courses with him.”
—Ahmed Abbasi, Student, Atlanta, USA

Shaykh Qays Arthur

A native of guyana with a mixed ancestral heritage, Ustadh Qays Arthur's commitment to education began in his country where after preliminary studies there and in the Middle East, he taught in mosques across the country, directed education programs, and worked with various interfaith and non-governmental organizations. Leaving to pursue more intensive study overseas, Ustadh Qays now brings his knowledge, passion, and sincerity to the courses he teaches for SunniPath and Dar Al Tawfiq. Concurrently, he regularly attends classes of Fiqh, Aqidah, and Arabic in Amman, where he lives with his family.

“I pray that Allaah put Baraaka and Rahma on Sunnipath, now Qibla, and it's employees. I hope Allaah gives me the chance to learn here and with Shaykh Qays.”
—Hector Lasprilla, Colombia

“The information shared by Sheikh Qays and Sheikh Hamza Karamali. The recorded lessons were excellent! And the amount of information shared by both instructors was excellent.”
—Andre Rishi, California, USA

Islam and the Environment
Accountability to the Divine

Man has abused the environment and is now facing the consequences. Tim Flannery, a well-known expert on climate change, stated “The amount of greenhouse gas in the atmosphere is already above the threshold that can potentially cause dangerous climate change. We are already at risk... It's not next year or next decade, it's now.” The UN also claims, “Destructive sudden heavy rains, intense tropical storms, repeated flooding and droughts are likely to increase, as will the vulnerability of local communities in the absence of strong concerted action.” As Muslims what is your action? What is our response? GNL071 will outline a comprehensive Islamic view and solution to the imminent environmental crisis. In addition to climate change, energy, food, waste, and water will be examined by analyzing the environment vis-à-vis Islamic belief, morality, and law.
