Take a behind-the-scenes tour of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh and discover the sinister side of Edinburgh’s medical history. From forensic murder trials and the body-snatching Burke and Hare to the sumptuous history of poisonous plants and their more nefarious uses. Learn the story behind the College’s collection of genuine murder weapons, discover the darker histories in our medical texts and learn of gruesome illustrations that uncover the dramatic lengths that medicine has gone to in order to pursue its goals.

Speakers are:

Elaine Thomson, medical historian and author of crime fiction (including Dark Asylum and Beloved Poison) on the history which inspires her writing

Iain MacIntyre, author of Scottish Medicine: An Illustrated History on grave robbing and Burke and Hare

Iain Milne, College Librarian, on the history of poisonous plants and their use

Rebecca Cessford, forensic history PhD student on the College’s murder weapon collections
