Title: De-Conditioning Ourselves-- Reducing Our Implicit Racial Biases

Description:  Previously we discussed why biases are easily formed and why we are ALL susceptible to the cultural conditioning that results in mental bias formation.  This month we will discuss some of the techniques/strategies that are in use to counter this cultural conditioning.  The focus will be on a bias reduction strategy, employed by Devine et al. (2012), that was founded on stereotype replacement, counter-stereotypic imaging, individuating, perspective taking, and contact.  A virtual role-playing game, “Fair Play” (available for free), will also be discussed.

The Equity Institute on Race, Culture & Transformative Action at IUPUI has partnered with the Division of Mental Health & Addiction to provide an online cultural competency training program.
