Date and time
Description
The Belgian Design Driven Community is proud to announce its second meetup:
"Legacy Inferno"
Part 1: Guest speaker Felienne Hermans will present "Applying Software Engineering Techniques to Spreadsheets"
Part 2: A round table on Domain-Driven Design and Legacy
The event is free and is open to everybody who is interested in Domain-Driven Design. Registration is required.
Applying Software Engineering Techniques to Spreadsheets
Spreadsheets are used extensively in businesses across all domains. However, the use of spreadsheets is not without risks. Field research estimates that 88% of all spreadsheets contain an error. This is not even that strange if you consider that spreadsheets often lack documentation, can have a long lifespan (5 years on averages) and grow so complex that they can hardly be modified anymore.
Sounds familiar, right? Many of the problems that spreadsheets are suffering from, are very similar to problems in software. Could we solve these problems with techniques from software engineering, like testing, refactoring and metrics? Over the past few years, Felienne Hermans has worked on her PhD thesis, which shows that indeed it is possible to apply SE methods to spreadsheets successfully to improve spreadsheet quality and ease of use.
About Felienne Hermans
Felienne is assistant professor at the Delft University of Technology. In January 2013, she defended her PhD thesis that centers around applying techniques for software to spreadsheets, in order to understand, visualize and improve them. In 2010 Felienne founded Infotron, a startup that uses the algorithms developed during the PhD project to analyze spreadsheet quality for large companies. In her spare time, Felienne volunteers as a referee for the First Lego League, a world wide technology competition for kids.
