In this edition of dd:COLLECTIVE we're collaborating with Betaworks, Cloudera, WeightWatchers.com, and Culture Shock to explore how companies make actionable use of big data. Topics will cover predicting outcomes before they happen with predictive technology, using big data and cognitive computing to create serendipitous product experiences, and real-time response. As technology plays an increasingly integral part in both media and entertainment, Debra co-created and teaches an undergraduate course in Big Data: Consumer Research at The New School for Public Engagement, the first of its kind. The platform is focused on the developments, trends, and innovations in this rapidly expanding field. Guest speakers have included experts from UN Global Pulse, Bloomberg Ventures, Electronic Frontier Foundation, Whitney Museum of American Art, Columbia School of Journalism, Lance Weiler and the Harmony Institute. She recently lectured on the subject at the CultureTech Festival in Derry/Londonderry, N. Ireland.
Jeff Hammerbacher is a founder and the Chief Scientist of Cloudera, and an Assistant Professor at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. Jeff was an Entrepreneur in Residence at Accel Partners immediately prior to founding Cloudera. Before Accel, he conceived, built, and led the Data team at Facebook. Before joining Facebook, Jeff was a quantitative analyst on Wall Street. Jeff earned his Bachelor's Degree in Mathematics from Harvard University.
Gilad is the Chief Data Scientist at betaworks, a technology company that operates as a studio, building new products, growing companies and seed investing. Previously, Gilad ran the data team at SocialFlow and built visualizations at Microsoft's FUSE Labs. His past work includes ‘Retweet Revolution’, visualizing the flow of information during the 2009 #IranElection riots, and a study investigating the relationship between mainstream media and social media channels during the Tunisian and Egyptian revolutions. Gilad is an advisor for media entities and startups. His work has been covered by the New York Times, the Guardian, Fast Company and the Atlantic Wire and published across a wide range of academic journals.
Virgilia is a product manager, community builder, and author. She is currently a Global Product Manager at WeightWatchers.com where she focuses on Search and Big Data. Virgilia has a passion for mentoring, startups, wellness, the marriage of offline/online engagement, and teaches Product Management at General Assembly. She has her MSc in Global Management, BA Honors in Political Science, and extensive coursework in product and systems design.
