Description

DCI, in partnership with the Construction Association of Nova Scotia is pleased to host the 2017 DCI Education Day - Building Science “An Atlantic Perspective”. Presented by John Straub (Principal and Senior Building Science Specialist, RDH Building Science Inc.) the full day presentation explores unknown (but should be known) building envelope problems and their solutions using detailed examples and current best practices. Alternate paths to code compliance (prescriptive, performance, trade-off) are also explored, focused on early design decisions and examining issues such as thermal bridging. The session will conclude with a panel discussion of the topic of building interiors including HVAC design and the interrelationship between interior and exterior environments.

Topics Covered:

  • Challenges associated with our regional climatic conditions: Horizontal Rain, Freeze Thaw Cycles etc

  • Best Practice as it relates to Rain Control, Rain Screens and the “Perfect Wall”.

  • Interactive detailing activity around critical building elements, “Avoiding Common Mistakes”

  • New Model National Energy Code: Alternate paths to compliance (prescriptive, performance, trade-offs)

  • Thermal Bridging: Strategies to avoid through preplanning and new building materials/systems.

  • Panel Discussion focused on Building Science as it relates to building interiors, HVAC, Retrofits and Industry Trends

John Straube Principal, Senior Building Science Specialist

John is a building science engineer working in RDH’s Toronto and Waterloo offices. John heads forensic investigations and leads research projects in the areas of low-energy building design, building enclosure performance, hygrothermal analysis, and field monitoring of wall assemblies. He is also a prolific writer, a noted public speaker, and a sought-after “performance coach” who helps other professionals coordinate their efforts and achieve higher levels of performance in their building projects. As one blogger wrote after attending a keynote speech: “he clearly loves what he does.”
