Event Details

In the Greater DC region, attracting and retaining young talent so that businesses, organizations and our neighborhoods thrive is a priority. Unfortunately, many young people in our community struggle with connecting to and fully leveraging education and career exploration for a variety of reasons including lack of awareness and opportunity. Mentoring youth is a proven avenue for engaging and benefitting both employers and youth towards this larger vision. For young people, they can increase their access to opportunity and networks while employers can offer engagement opportunities for employees, elevate their brands as great places to work and strengthen our community.

To open a dialog among a diverse group of employers, the Office of Out of School Time Grants and Youth Outcomes as part of the Office of the Deputy Mayor for Education has partnered with MENTOR to host a regional, employer-focused Youth Mentoring Design Lab on Wednesday, April 17 from 9:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. at the American Society of Landscape Architects building located at 636 I St. NW Washington DC 20001. Breakfast will be provided.

The objectives for our conversation are:

  • To learn employer interest in mentoring as a benefit to employees and organizations
  • To hear from mentoring experts about what works
  • To identify diverse opportunities for employer engagement in mentoring
  • To consider and plan for next steps towards increasing mentorship aligned with employer and community goals

Your input is essential in creating connections between young people and caring professional adults to help expand and deepen youth mentoring in Washington DC. Whether or not you have robust volunteer opportunities or mentoring programs in place, we want to add your voice to this discussion so please join us.

The session will be facilitated by Daniel Horgan, Senior Director of Corporate Engagement at MENTOR. Daniel will integrate case studies and lessons learned from his work with employers including LinkedIn, Nike, Starbucks, Deloitte, GM and others.

Please respond via this invitation link to confirm your participation by April 16. If you have any questions, please contact Daniel Horgan at dhorgan@mentoring.org
