The club is kicking off the 2013 season with a fun Splash-N-Dash aquathon. Wondering what the heck this is? Think triathlon minus the biking leg. Participants will swim (in a heated pool) and then transition into an outdoor run. This event is perfect for anyone who wants to ease into triathlon, allowing them to experience what it's like to transition from one sport to another in a simulated race environment. The race is also perfect for those that may be more seasoned and just want to dust off the cobwebs before the season officially begins later this month. Still intrigued? Read on!
The event will be held in the quiet neighborhood of Yorktown, located in Arlington County. To help maximize race simulation, we've pulled permits to cone off the roads, we've partnered with Rev 3 Racing to provide chip timing for the event, and it will be fully USAT sanctioned. All of this to help you get the best possoble racing experience in a fun, and stress-free environment. The race will offer a short distance and mid-distance option (see below) and include a transition area where participants will tranisiton from the swim into the run. To round out the day and provide the total race experience, we will conduct an awards ceremony and provide some food after the race.

Swim Course (Pool Swim)
The swim will be organized into waves of 16 (max) for each race, the 800y/10k and the 400y/5k. Racers will be seeded based on their 100y split provided during registration (fastest to slowest). Racers will swim 2 per lane across all 8 lanes. The first wave in each race distance will begin together and complete 16 laps (800y) and 8 laps (400y), REMAINING on their own side of the lane. When each racer completes their laps, they will exit the pool, run across the swim finish timing mat, and enter into transition. The second wave of racers will be queued up and as racers from the first wave exit the pool, a racer from the next wave will be released, cross the swim start timing mat, and begin their swim leg in the open lane. They will complete the swim exactly as stated above. The swim will follow this process until we make our way through all waves.
Volunteers will be stationed at the swim start and at each lane to release and coordinate swimmers in and out of the water. Racers should take extra caution as they begin and finish their swim.
The transition area will be situated just outside of the Yorktown Acquatic Center in the parking lot, approximently 100 yards from the swim exit. There will NOT be assigned spots. Racers will be able to setup their running gear in a transition location of their choice prior to the race. Transition will close at 8:00a
Run Course (Closed Roads & Trail)
The run course is classified as rolling hills and will take place mostly on the road with two out and back's on a bike trail. Runners will keep to their right and exit the Yorktown Aquatic Center via the parking lot's access road and then head Northeast on 28th St towards N. Yorktown Blvd where they will cross the road (note: all intersections will be policed) and continue on the coned off north lane (note: into the direction of traffic). Runners will keep to their right on N. Yorktown Blvd until they come to the Bike Trail where volunteers will direct them to turn onto the trail to complete and out and back, again keeping to their right. Runners will then turn left back onto N. Yorktown Blvd where they will complete and out and back and then return to the bike trail where they will complete one more out and back before returning to N. Yorktown Blvd. Runners will turn left back onto 28th St towards Yorktown Aquatic Center. 5k runners will keep to the right and enter into the finishing shoot while the 10k runners will turn at the turn-a-round and comple the course one more time.
