Join us for the following events on April 16th, in celebration of DC Emancipation. On view duirng the day DC Emancipation Art Exhibit provided by the 1st Year Museum Studies Students at Duke Ellington School of the Arts.
From Bullets to Ballots: the Voting Rights Legacy of the USCT
3pm to 3:30pm
Scholar Hari Jones, the curator of the exhibit Glorious March to Liberty: Civil War to Civil Rights, will weave together the legacy of the United States Colored Troops with the voting rights struggle in the United States.

Drill Presentation: "School of the Soldier," and wreath laying featuring Andrew Green, USCT

Born and raised a slave in the City of Washington, Andrew Green would gain his freedom with the DC Emancipation Act and later join the 1st USCT regiment based in Washington, DC during the Civil War. Come hear Andrew Green's story and learn about life for a soldier in the Union Army.

Reading of the Names of the First 3,100 freed

April 16th marks the day that over 3,000 enslaved persons were granted freedom under the DC Compensated Emancipation Act of April 1862. Celebrate this event by joining us in a reading of the names of those first freed.
