Event description

Description

Situated along the eastern shore of the Anacostia River, Anacostia Park and Poplar Point are prime spots for viewing waterfowl, raptors, gulls, and other fall birds like kinglets, waxwings, and juncos. Also, to get ready for Thanksgiving, it is one of the few spots in DC where Wild Turkeys are found!! Don't worry, though. We'll only have binoculars in hand as we seek them and other great DC birds out on our second to last walk of 2017.

Directions

Metro: Anacostia Metro (Green line) is a 5 minute walk. When you exit the trains, walk towards the PARKING LOT (there is a sign pointing that way). Exit the station and go RIGHT down the sidewalk. Follow the signs for the Anacostia River Walk Trail/NCP East Headquarters. There will be a “hiker/biker” entrance on the left into the US Park Police compound. Once inside the compound, the Operations Facility is the last building on the right with blue awnings. Meet at the main public entrance on the side. From here, the walk will proceed to the river, left along the trail towards Poplar Point.

Driving: Ample parking at Anacostia Metro. Parking is free on weekends. We may be able to park on the Operations Facility grounds. If so, we will send an email with specifics in advance of the event. There is also limited parking at Poplar Point.

As always, please be mindful of weather conditions, dress and hydrate appropriately, and use caution when traveling to new or unfamiliar birding locations.

Tickets are available two weeks before the event.
