Description

We invite you to attend a joint meeting of the DC Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics
and American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry titled, “Healing the Pain: Perspectives
from Child and Adolescent Psychiatry on Adolescent Suicide and Opioid Misuse”. Dr. David Brent, an
internationally recognized expert on adolescent suicide, will discuss assessment and safety planning
with special reference to management issues stemming from social media suicide mentions and the
recent Netflix show “13 Reasons Why”. Dr. Geetha Subramaniam, a national expert in the management
of youth with opioid use disorders, will briefly discuss how child psychiatrists and pediatricians can be
effective in addressing the opioid epidemic, through screening, assessment, and treatment, including
pharmacotherapies. Pediatricians and child psychiatrist audience members are divided into small groups
and participate in case-based learning moderated by a pediatrician and an expert child psychiatrist, after
each of the presentations. In addition, there is time for networking and consultation among local and
national physicians both before and after the formal program.
